Taking down the establishment?

The windows are shaking. Brazil must have won today.

The party is seriously on in Corso Italia. It will be for the next few weeks. If you are Italian, Portuguese, Brazilian, Argentine, Mexican, Uruguayan, Paraguayan, Chilean, Honduran or Spanish please feel free to come to my hood for a visit when your team wins. You won't be sorry.

I went to a hella good concert on Sunday with Jimmy, tuneyards. She is one of the most entertaining and talented musician I've ever seen. At certain moments of the show I felt like I was at Ellen Degeneres' first attempt at music, and at other times I wondered when a rapper would join her onstage. Incredibly diverse songwriting, but with a very distinct sound.

Enjoy these gems and any live bootlegs you can find!

Big Wheel kept on turning.

Some Canadian folklore I ran across recently:
Living a mere 6 miles from the center of the earth, they were creatures of habit, feeding on any bacteria that could withstand the pressure and heat of the environment. As their flesh ate through the molten rock in front of them, a steam filled fissure followed behind them.

Only one rogue specimen ventured out toward the crust.

When she broke through to the sunlight, no land dwellers noticed. The the energy that escaped her body thrust itself upon all of us.

The energy released at that moment will sustain us for a thousand years.

Imagine if we were still making up folk stories…

If I had a small child and didn’t want them to run across the street, I would probably make up some story about a streetcar driven by a ghost. The ghost would spend most of its time on one of the Ontario courthouses as a gargoyle or as a snake around someone’s neck. But, once in a while, it would commandeer a Queen streetcar and look for little children to hit. The story would end: “and that’s how your older brother that you never met died.”

I'm sure you can tell that my moustache is extra greasy today.

Toll Booth Blues

Two short items in today's post.

1. Clever use of good weather:

- Run outside more. I don't go to the gym quite as often during the summer season. Running outside, especially on trails or uneven ground, is much healthier than running on treadmills. Plus, more people get to see you in your leotard.

2. Graveyard

Hold on to your hats. It's a hell of a ride.

The Best Evers

Oil is currently spilling upward into the Gulf of Mexico at an alarming rate. I don't necessarily identify as an environmentalist (I'm more of a feminist and socialist), but this is still a disturbing problem from my perspective. As a species, we may be killing ourselves with our own consumption.

I remember my grade 3 environmental economics class and the perfectly logical argument that the teacher would present to us: As we pollute our environment and begin to use up our non-regenerating natural resources, people will move their money into abatement technologies (in order to improve human health) and products made of recycled or reused materials (they'll be cheaper than products made of new material).

This is well and good and may be an accurate description of how humans react economically to changes in our natural environment. But, will this reaction save us when the end draws near?

What if we can't abate enough pollutants to save the most vulnerable? What if some of our natural resources don't have alternatives? I guess the answers are easy: the vulnerable die and the rest of us do without some of the products we have learned to enjoy.

I don't believe that we will wipe ourselves out, not completely anyways.  Sad truth, it's the poorest who will really suffer. They won't be able to protect themselves from pollutants in their air, land and water and will therefore pay the highest price for our poor treatment of the environment.

Those of us with good income and assets will likely be fine. We will be able to buy clean water, safe food and air filters.

I think we should be environmentalists not because our environment has any intrinsic value, but because the environment has such a high value to us. Our responsibility is to the world's most vulnerable people, not a stupid tree that pokes you in the eye when you aren't paying attention or a pathetic rosebush trying to protect itself from predators with those annoying little thorns. To hell with you, vegetation.

Maybe I should call myself an envirosocialist or tree hugging jebus.

Yours,

Ramk

Succession

By succession I don't mean the passing of power from one leader to another, nor the development of an ecological plant and animal community. By succession I mean the creation of a new state.

I recently became the proprietor of a great little house near College and Ossington (lock up your Italian grandmothers...I'm on the prowl.....rrrrrrrrrr). Although the property is small and has limited infrastructure, I'm considering succession from Canada.

I'm fully aware of the potential issues and the incredible amount of work that would be involved (hiring border guards, admission to the UN, a policy on refugees, etc...) but I think that it's feasible.

It would be fun to have my face (or other body part) on the currency. It would also be nice to have a non-democracy in North America.

I'll be accepting applications for residency starting in early June. Application forms are available here.

Cleared for landing.

Finally.  After two whole fortnights of searching, I have found a band.

It probably won't be my only band, or even my favorite band, but it's a solid group of individuals with studio space in a band factory on the west side.

All it took to get the offer was performing a blood ritual and dazzling them with my spoken word performance.  My only real concern with the band is that they practice naked in front of a large window.  After practice they shave each other, but the shaving part doesn't really bother me.

The nice thing about drumming regularly is that your hands get mangled. I feel like more of a man, with the cuts and blisters to prove it.  My chest hair is growing in thicker.  My moustache is greasier.  I'm even less sensitive to the feelings of others.

Happy Friday y'all.  Look for me at brunch tomorrow midday.  I'll be the greasy haired guy watching to see if you finish your potato wedges.

Ass...bestos

Ha! Assbestos...

So, I'm on a serious search for a band now. It's like looking for a job in a lot of ways. I lie, telling them by email (to some craigslist address) that I have completed high school and haven't served time for white collar crimes.

Last night I played with a band called "The Tampons" or something like that.

A friend's* blog recently reminded me of a job I had and loved for a long time. Bar tending. It's a great job for anyone with a dull mind and the ability to make anyone believe you are seriously poor.

I used to be the favorite bartender for a group of executives from an advertising firm in the Entertainment District. They would come in for lunch almost every day and I would serve them most of the time. Those dudes paid for two of my three mobility scooters.

In the evening, my job would be to flirt with everyone in sight and up-sell certain brands. One minute I could be telling a lady that her hat is really sexy and she should drink Grey Goose instead of Smirnoff, the next minute I could be telling a dude that his dreadlocks are extra phat and he should try Blanche de Chambly if he likes Hoegaarden.

Oh, I haven't heard back about the job with the Laotian Embassy yet. Starting to lose hope. Trying not to cry...

Love,
Ramk Chardri

Out with the Old

Big changes are coming in my life. I know because I can smell it.

One way I know is that I have been feeling a little stale. I should get a walk-in refrigerator to keep myself fresh. My naturopathic doc calls it mental dullness. She looked at my brain through my ear and indicated that it looked grey and mushy.

I think she thinks I’m stupid, and it’s possible that she is completely right. I have suffered from medical grade stupidity for all of my life. It’s a little surprising that I have been able to pull together a relatively successful life despite my medical condition. I haven’t always been such a successful dude. Two weeks ago I had a serious crack problem, but things are turning around...

Some of the expected changes:
  • This week will be the official wardrobe changeover from winter to summer. I have to air out my thong swimsuits and patch all of the holes.
  • I will make a new friend. This new friend will have a hot tub in their back yard and will invite me over all of the time.
  • I will play with three new bands in the next month. Two are already signed up!
  • I will stop making deals with the devil. That includes any of you who I deem to be toxic.
  • If the Laotian embassy doesn't get back to me, I will find a job with another embassy representing a small narcissistic government.
  • I'm gonna buy a house in Parkdale or Roncesvalles.
Going to Joy Bistro tonight for Dave's 72nd birthday party. Should be fun except that he only eats prunes and he orders everyone's food for them.

I also went to a Peruvian place this weekend called La Cocina de Dona Luz with my brethren Oliver Vasquez Toledo. The Peruvian fare there is great, but since Oliver is visiting from Mexico for only a couple of weeks, he has trouble following the rules. The waiter asked him politely to get down from the table top but he just kept on dancing and taking off his clothes. A lot of the other patrons didn't seem to mind. A couple of them even paid him for the entertainment by putting $5 bills in his underwear. Nothing is wrong with Oliver, the problem is that table top dancing is taboo in Canada.

Viva la revolucion!

Meeting You

I know what you're thinking.

"Gee whiz, I wish I could meet that Ramk guy."

I get that a lot.

Hold on. Don't be thinkin' stuff like that too quickly. You don't even know me. I could have horns, breath fire, sport a third leg or smell like oysters. You should be more careful. I won't always be around to get you out of trouble.

You may be able to tell who I am by the things I yell in the subway. If someone isn't holding onto one of the hand rails or stripper poles, I can't keep myself from screaming at them: "HOLD ON OR YOU'RE GONNA FALL". I don't think people really mind it, except for babies. Babies get so upset when people yell at them.

a link*

Don't worry, I want to meet you too. But, how is that ever going to happen? All you are is a faceless internet surfer who happened to catch the wave headed in my direction. Hang ten. I'm going to the beach bar to get a drink with an umbrella in it.

Maybe I should set up a live video site. That way we could meet and you wouldn't be exposed to my musk.

Peace to Kyrgyzstan.

Mutiny in the Woods

A quick note of praise for a band completely new to me.

Everything Everything

They sound like: Johnny Clegg, Incubus and The Cure. On top of that, they are my new MGMT (which will drop out of regular rotation with their forthcoming album).

My favorite song of so far is My Keys, Your Boyfriend. The song is like the recollection of a rough night on the beautiful morning after. You hope the weekend is coming quickly while you're listening to it. Happy Friday. It also has great beat patterns (give the drummer sum) and the chord progression is dubious in a good way. It's got 8bit sounds and everything. Shucks...I like it.

I'm a sucker for anything that's got a dance-able beat and is fun. Not saying I don't love all genres and styles of music, but I have a serious crush on those bands that can make my feet scream "I gotta move".  Any good leads, please let me know.

Ramk out.

I'll do what I want.

Things I want to do:

  1. Look at some lots of graffiti.
  2. Start a MF band.
  3. Get a new job.
These obviously represent my short, medium and long term goals, respectively.

I want to find a time in the next week to swing by Queen West and Spadina to look at some of the amazing shit people put on those original brick buildings. It's one of my favorite hoods in the T-dot. It's prolly the most vibrant place in the world (anyplace I've been at least). I used to work in 401 Richmond. Had an average of 36.3sph (shoes per hour) in that beautiful studio office.

Start a MF band. Obviously speaks for itself. I'm not strong in the whole 'finding the time for it' neighbourhood. I've been trying to set up a freestyle music night with my friend Jimmy, but the days never line up. When he's free, I'm usually busy washing my hair. When I'm free, he usually has a date with a goat or other farm animal.

You can believe the press. Fox Network had it right. I am tired of being a cobbler. So, I applied for a position at the Laotian Embassy. If I get it, I'll be their Policy Guru of Canadian Affairs or something along those lines. The first policy that I unilaterally declare will increase tensions between Canada and Laos substantially.

I would really like to accomplish these goals. I can't handle any goals that go farther into the future. I am but one man.

If anyone out their can help me accomplish these goals, please step forward and tell me your name and postal code. That's all I will need to find you, once I have the Lao People's Democratic Republic on my side.

They should call it the Lao People's MF Democratic Republic.

Peace.

You have been indoctrinarted

Washing dishes makes me feel like the proletariat.

My natural... nay... instinctual tendency towards socialism fits very nicely with my attraction to art.

Especially art made by humans. We humans are great at influencing each other*.

I love propaganda because it is one of the most sincere forms of art. It doesn't pretend to hide what it is. It isn't a metaphor for anything else. It just tells you what it wants to tell you.

Uncle Sam wants YOU to sell crack to minorities.

Vietnam and Cuba are tied for the places I've been with the most indoctrinart, but I hear that Ireland's murals could be the mother load.

Many of these countries have found great ways of commercializing the unique artform. One of the best places to buy good quality prints of classic Vietnamese indoctrinart is Dogma Vietnam.

Song of the day: mashup of Rihanna and RATM!

Yo te enseño Lola

My wife and I went to Cuba last week with four of our best friends.  Cuba is a great place.  The people are swell, the sun is hot, the cities are chill and the beach is fine. The week went by in a beautiful haze of laughter, sun, music and beer.

Clothes are a waste of precious earthen material that should be used to continue cleaning the air we breathe. Instead they're stuck covering our bodies from supposedly harsh environments. That's the best thing about the south, clothing optional.

My feet are raw from barefootedness (word?). I feel my most Alpha-male when I have not worn shoes for any longer than a day. My veins course with testosterone and omega 3 oils (which my naturopathic doctor tells me to take every day).

Now for a healthy dose of propaganda:

This is Compay Segundo's Chan Chan, performed by Buena Vista Social Club.

Although my friend Adam and I are decidedly not musical soulmates, we share a deep appreciation of Cuban music. We realized it when I showed him the album by pianist Ruben Gonzalez I bought on our second day there.

I first fell for Ruben Gonzalez in India. I bought an album in China and dragged it on my back for two months and four countries before listening to it thoroughly. Those are two months of my life I will never get back.

Cuba's air smells like music. In fact, you end up associating everything there with a song. For example, the heat of the sun or the feeling of your buddy Dave driving home a high five after he's had over fifteen "Tigers con ron". For some reason he insisted on giving me a high five when he finished fifteen drinks of any kind. My hand is sore.

If you want a quick rundown of classical Cuban music, listen to any 10 songs performed by the Buena Vista Social Club. BVSC is similar to Broken Social Scene, both all-star lineups of some of their country's greatest musical performers. Sadly, the dream ended in 2009.

The only drawback to the trip was being there with my friend Mark. He was always staggering about with a beer or rum in his hand, swearing at all the children.

The guy is so white that I would stand beside him for the extra sun rays reflecting off his skin.

The above video is extra appropriate as my next post will give you the lowdown on 'indoctrinart' (term hereby coined).

Until next time, keep it classy Havana.

Foreign affairs.

The title of a harlequin romance?
Possibly.

Right now, it is more of tragedy.

Going away on vacations with five of my favorite people in the world, but because I do not own an ipod or any fancy gizmos like that, I won't have access to my favorite music. It might seem strange that a successful cobbler in the fast-paced fashion industry of Toronto doesn't have a simple working mp3 player. Actually, I don't own much of anything (especially socks).

What do you do when music isn't available?

Peeps keep telling me Havana is the shizzle. But ain't no Pitchfork in Havana, at least not for me. I'm expected to enjoy the architecture, lie around in the sun, play volleyball and get yelled at by the lifeguard for getting sand in her hair, without Empire of the Sun. It's not humane.

It's lucky that Cuba has some of the best music in the world (in a week and a half, I will have the best Cuban music post for all of y'all).

I will miss all three of you, my readers. Try to make it without me. Day by day. Hour by hour.

Also, be careful about those diets. Last time I did a detox, my body was craving red meat so badly that I sleepwalked (sp? word?) into the living room at night and ate my pet hamster.

At least I ate him raw. That's something specialty diet related, right?

Until next week, peace.

Faux Birthday!

So. Very interesting day today.

Everyone was nice to me. That is... almost everyone.

Got into the office particularly perkily (word?). Had a very productive morning. Got twenty three pairs of newly crafted shoes out the door.

I only remembered what day it was when I smelled the melting wax.

My faux birthday! My second favorite day of the year! Oh....how wondrous.

My friend Renee baked me cupcakes! The ultimate in icing delivery systems! She actually had to get me off the phone with my leather supplier because she said her hand was burning. The sparkling candles were pouring over her arms.

We shared the cupcakes. Just the two of us. All 18 of them.

Suddenly (two hours later) my main man Brett came in with the new tUnE-yArDs album for me! What a guy. Happy faux birthday to me.

On top of everything, all my best workmates throw me a party at a restaurant after work. Gosh, the day was going great.

But then, my friend Bernita comes.

Shit.

Be warned. Above is an example of how I plug friends.

A little boy named Ramk.

Blast!

A brand new blog and nothing to talk about.

Well, a little about me then:

I awoke just before dawn. It was a full moon, just like me. Other than that, my early childhood is fuzzy to me. Probably too young to remember.

Once, when I was about 17 and working for a china and crystal retailer, I backed a large cube truck into the outside of the company warehouse. No one ever found out. Please do not tell them.

My current address ends in Toronto, ON (postal code). I make my living working for the people. I tell people that I'm the combined spirits of Kant, Marx and Lenin all reborn in a Canadian guy, but no one believes me.

Other things about me:

  • I like to beat box.
  • Microwaves scare me.
  • I used to dislike tea, but now I like tea.
  • I play a wide variety of real and made up instruments.

What this blog will provide:

  • Light reading, especially for after those hard days of toiling in the fields.
  • A good opportunity to laugh at someone instead of with someone.
  • My opinions on everything you don't really care about. Primarily those things will include Toronto stuff, art, music and my always zany "story-time".
  • Me plugging all of my friends.
  • Many lists.
  • Other cool MF stuff.

Enough of this nonsense.

Follow this blog. Do it NOW.
